Being an author is like walking a tightrope without a net. When an author becomes more than just a writer, they bare their soul into their writing. You have put yourself out there to be criticized and ridiculed even by a fellow writers and authors. Someone with thin skin like I don’t always survive. You must be thick skinned in this business. So, what does it take? It takes a lot of stressful evenings and nights for me; it may be days for you. When I started writing it was nothing more than a release from stress now it has gone from a hobby to a desired career. This is where the rubber meets the road. Are you able to cut and take on what it takes to be a career Author?
If termination was all it took, I've put plenty into it. Creativity and development of stories go along with it. I guess my creativity came from being an only child. In the 60s and early 70s as a child, I didn't have the things to entertain me as those will do today. My entertainment was going outside riding my bike, playing with dolls, going to the pool, beach or playing in the rain. You created your own world when you were an only child. You had games, make believe friends, puppet shows, and you did have some friends if they didn't live farther away than just down the street. I lived on a farm in the country so becoming creative was entertainment. I went as far as making my doll clothes, let me be clear, Barbie doll clothes from old handkerchiefs, ribbons, elastic bands, whatever I could find.
As I got older, I started writing. Now this started when I was a young teen to possibly a preteen just writing short stories there were for my entertainment only. They were worlds and events that I created from my own mind. Now I'm sure if I still had those stories, I would see that something probably sparked those ideas. As a teen I enjoyed watching the Hardy boys. Now some people the first thing they think of is the Hardy boys is the book series well the show itself, I'm sure was derived from that book series. I enjoyed the story itself from viewing it and wishing that I could write something that was like what was going on in those stories. The genre is quite different from what I write the stories were more mystery and sci-fi than romance, although they did sneak some romance into those episodes between Frank and a girl or Joe and a girl or possibly with Nancy Drew.
My post will be short today as I am getting ready to go to work now, but I'm sure you understand what I'm getting at. So, as a struggling artist, I guess, I will continue to do what I feel is my best work and to improve on it as I go. If you are interested in writing my advice is if nothing else, write what you know, for your entertainment, write what you you understand then go for it.
