In my opinion, there has been no greater entertainer than Elvis Presley. Born Elvis Aaron Presley on this day in 1935 to his mother Gladys and his father Vernon, who was born in a small two room house in Tupelo Mississippi along with his twin Jessie Garon. Unfortunately Jessie was stillborn.
Elvis found his love for music in a church where his family attended. His first love was Gospel music and he sang it so well. How Great thou Art is still a favorite among his many fans. I have favorites of my own. Elvis was depicted as average by one of his teachers and was encouraged to participate in a talent contest after impressing one of his teachers, and they say is history.
Elvis became a supper star regardless of the day and age he lived in. There was always some type of controversy that surrounded him as being indecent because of the way he presented himself on stage. By todays standards what happened then would be considered G as a rating. Nevertheless the man became who he was in his own right.
He also earned the respect of men when he too became part of the armed forces. Women didn't only like, so did the men, his peers. Unfortunately it also became his demise. Elvis became trapped in a world of his own . If you think about it, He couldn't go to the movie without buying the place out because of fans. He was unable to function as most because of his stadium, Going to the dentist, a simple task was something that took multiple body guards and appointments after hours, as in the middle of the night.
It's sad to say that I would have like to have known Elvis, the man instead of just Elvis the star. Not that it mattered. Elvis was a star, my mother and fathers age and I didn't discover him until I was 6 or seven. I received a portable record player and Blue Christmas for a Christmas that year and I played it so much I wore it out. I still have that original album. Last year I replaced it with a copy but I still have the original. It has become one of my best loved Christmas gifts.
There will never be another Elvis. Happy Birthday Elvis, you still remain adored and loved by your fans of multiple generations. Peace to your soul.
